The Bahamas Surf Association held the first of three planned contests to determine who will make up the Bahamas Nation Surf Team set to travel to Costa Rica in late July for the Billabong World Surfing Games. The surf at Garbanzo's was small but very contestable and there was a decent turn-out for the event. The contest was held at pretty much dead low tide, which combined with the smallish waves made for challenging conditions getting out over the sharp coral reef to the lineup; while the more experienced competitors did the barefoot 'reef dance', several of the younger contestants wore flip flops to walk over the reef, kicking them off when they reached deep enough water to paddle. Bahamian ingenuity at its finest!
