Record Turnout & Great Surfing At 2nd BSA Winter Surf Contest, Garbanzos, Feb 22 '09
Supporters and competitors turned out in record numbers on Sunday 22nd February at Garbanzos for the second BSA contest of the winter season. Conditions were very rippable with clean chest high plus waves and sunny conditions, just right for some aggressive surfing from all competitors. The Guana crew showed up with some beautiful hand-made wooden trophies for the top 3 finishers in the Open Mens Division and in the end it was a 1-2 sweep for them as Blake Sands and cousin Joshua Sands took the top two postions, closely followed by Christian and Andrew Wilhoyte. Jake Albury also earned a spot as "sub" for Andrew in the final and turned in a great days' surfing.
A big thank you to everyone for turning out to support the surfers, at the end of the day the BSA had raised over $250 which will go towards sponsoring the Bahamian surf team to compete in the ISA contest this July in Costa Rica. Special thanks to the judges -- Tim, Christine, Scott, Jeff and Chappie, and to Kevin for assisting with timing the heats. Delicious treats and snacks were provided by Amanda Larke, Rachael Aberle, Jane Engle, Sara Cox and Maria for the yummy brownies! Thank you Jeff Gale for the shiny new flags! Here's looking forward to seeing everyone for the next contest coming up in the next few weeks -- stay tuned for details!
